For too long, environmental politics in Italy (as elsewhere) has been trapped in a false choice: ideological climate policies on one side, denial or disengagement on the other. Neither offers the pragmatic, credible solutions that Italians are looking for.
The problem here is the environment should never have become the monopoly of one political family – in this case the Left. Conservatism has always been about stewardship—protecting what we have inherited so we can pass it on to future generations. Caring for nature, defending our landscapes, strengthening local communities, and ensuring long-term prosperity are deeply conservative principles, and these values should drive the narrative they have to build on the environment.
That is why Shared Ground brought together politicians, experts, academics, and civil society leaders for nine months to develop a new vision: a genuinely conservative environmental agenda for Italy.
The result is the Manifesto for Green Conservatism—a practical alternative to ideological environmentalism. Rooted in realism rather than utopianism, it puts people, families, communities, and economic competitiveness at the heart of climate and environmental policy. It shows that protecting nature and defending prosperity are not competing goals, but complementary ones.
More than a manifesto, this publication is a roadmap. It combines a clear philosophical vision with concrete policy proposals across the issues that will shape Italy’s future.
Green conservatism is not about borrowing ideas from the Left. It is about reclaiming an issue that has always belonged to the conservative tradition—and offering Italians a positive, credible vision for the future.
